Login & Authentication

Learn how to access your ResearchConnectX account and manage your login sessions.

Logging In

Email & Password Login

  1. Navigate to the ResearchConnectX homepage
  2. Click Login or Sign In
  3. Enter your Email Address
  4. Enter your Password
  5. (Optional) Check Remember Me to stay logged in
  6. Click Login

Single Sign-On (SSO) Login

Click the appropriate SSO button:

  • Sign in with Microsoft - For Microsoft Azure AD
  • Sign in with ORCID - For ORCID accounts
  • Sign in with Google - For Google accounts
  • Institutional Login - Select your institution for SAML2 authentication

You'll be redirected to your provider's login page. After successful authentication, you'll be returned to ResearchConnectX.

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

If you've enabled 2FA:

  1. Enter your email and password as usual
  2. You'll be prompted for a verification code
  3. Open your authenticator app (Google Authenticator, Authy, etc.)
  4. Enter the 6-digit code
  5. Click Verify

Backup Codes

When setting up 2FA, you'll receive backup codes. Store these securely:

  • Use them if you lose access to your authenticator app
  • Each code can only be used once
  • Generate new codes in Settings > Security

Password Reset

If You've Forgotten Your Password

  1. Click Forgot Password? on the login page
  2. Enter your registered email address
  3. Click Send Reset Link
  4. Check your email for the password reset link
  5. Click the link in the email
  6. Enter your new password twice
  7. Click Reset Password

The password reset link expires after 60 minutes for security.

Session Management

Active Sessions

View and manage all active sessions where you're logged in:

  1. Go to Settings > Account Settings
  2. Navigate to Sessions
  3. View all active browser sessions with:
    • Device type
    • Browser
    • IP address
    • Location
    • Last activity time

Logout from Other Devices

To remotely log out from all other sessions:

  1. Go to Settings > Sessions
  2. Click Logout Other Browser Sessions
  3. Enter your password to confirm
  4. All other sessions will be terminated

This is useful if:

  • You left your account logged in on a public computer
  • You suspect unauthorized access
  • You want to ensure only your current session is active

Account Linking

You can link multiple authentication methods to the same account:

  1. Log in with your primary method
  2. Go to Settings > Account Settings
  3. Navigate to Linked Accounts
  4. Click Link next to the provider you want to add:
    • Microsoft Azure AD
    • ORCID
    • Google
    • SAML2 (institutional)
  5. Complete the authentication process

Benefits:

  • Log in using any linked method
  • Access your publications from linked ORCID or Google Scholar
  • Use institutional SSO when on campus

To remove a linked authentication provider:

  1. Go to Settings > Linked Accounts
  2. Click Unlink next to the provider
  3. Confirm the action
caution

Ensure you have at least one login method remaining or a password set before unlinking an account.

Staying Logged In

Remember Me Option

  • Checking "Remember Me" keeps you logged in for 30 days
  • Your session will persist even after closing the browser
  • Only use on personal devices

Session Timeout

For security, sessions expire after:

  • Active session: 120 minutes of inactivity
  • Remember Me: 30 days
  • SSO session: Depends on your provider's settings

Login Issues & Troubleshooting

Account Locked

After multiple failed login attempts, your account may be temporarily locked:

  • Wait 15 minutes before trying again
  • Use the password reset option
  • Contact support if the issue persists

SSO Not Working

If institutional SSO fails:

  • Verify you're using the correct institution
  • Check with your IT department about SSO availability
  • Try logging in with email/password if previously set

Session Expired

If your session expires:

  • Simply log in again
  • Enable "Remember Me" for longer sessions
  • Check if your browser is blocking cookies

Can't Receive Reset Email

  • Check your spam/junk folder
  • Verify the email address you entered
  • Wait a few minutes for email delivery
  • Check with your email administrator about filtering

Security Best Practices

Protect Your Account

  • Use a strong, unique password
  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication
  • Don't share your password
  • Log out from shared computers
  • Review active sessions regularly

Safe Login Habits

  • Always verify you're on the official ResearchConnectX domain
  • Don't save passwords in shared browsers
  • Use a password manager
  • Be cautious of phishing emails

Report Suspicious Activity

If you notice:

  • Unrecognized active sessions
  • Unexpected password reset emails
  • Changes you didn't make

Contact support immediately and change your password.
